Unbound Daily Briefing – Tuesday 28th April

Today news will be dominated by events in Westminster about the Mandelson appointment, with a debate and vote taking place on whether or not the Prime Minister should appear before the Privileges Committee regarding his perceived mistruths to Parliament. Media should however not neglect the much bigger issues surrounding the King's visit to meet President Trump , the Iran war and the impact it will have on trade and the energy markets and the state of UK, European and US defences.

As a non party site we have no comments on the party politics in the Commons, but do have good materials on the UK/US trade relationship, the disagreements between the EU/UK and the US over the Iran war and the closure of the Straits, and the background to the rows between the US and UK over the Diego Garcia Chagos base, Cyprus, the Falklands, and commitment to the task of re opening navigation in the Middle East. The King's speech in the US will need to tackle the US/UK defence partnership, the trade Agreements and the use of US/UK bases.

The UK / US Trade Relationship - Key Points

  • The USA is the UK's largest trading partner nation, with over £300 Billion in annual trade between the two nations
  • The UK has a trade surplus with the US, exporting over £59 Billion of goods and £137 Billion in services in 2024
  • The UK, due to its departure from the EU in 2020, was able to secure one of the best revised trading relationships with the US in the "Liberation Day" tariff revisions
